2017-2018 Welcome Back Letter from the Superintendent

Dear Biggs Unified School District, Parents, Students and Guardians,

Welcome to all returning and new students to the Biggs Unified School District!  We are excited to be providing a high quality education to the best students in Butte County.  Our true success comes from our dedication to the Biggs Unified School District’s core values which consist of: Academic Excellence, Respect for Human Differences, Cooperative and Caring Relationships, and Commitment to Community.  These principles represent the non-negotiable belief system which serves as the bedrock of our school community.  I hope you will join me in honoring and emphasizing these high ideals at all times.
Classes at all district schools start on Wednesday, August 16th.  Please check the sites for individual school starting times. The district is excited to welcome one new teacher at Biggs Elementary, Melissa Carr Heath a Biggs Alumni and University of Pepperdine graduate.  Mrs. Heath will be teaching first grade at Biggs Elementary.  We are also excited to welcome Melissa Green as our speech pathologist to the district, completing her degree at Chico State. Welcome to our Biggs Unified Family.

We have a few openings in our Full Day Transitional Kindergarten program featuring our California Common core aligned educational program.  Contact Mrs. King, Principal at Biggs Elementary (530) 868-5870.  Biggs High School will be offering several new courses through an online program called Accellus.  Students can take several advance placement (AP) courses and/or credit recovery courses offered during a Zero period before the regular day.

The District is excited to announce the Ag shop at the high school has been remodeled over the summer and will feature eight new state of the art welders and a new plasma cutter.  Biggs Elementary and Richvale Elementary cafeterias have also been remodeled over the summer with several other projects completed at each site, please come take a look.

We are very excited at Biggs USD to announce the advancement in technology over the summer.  Through a grant the district now has Wi-Fi at all school sites.  Through a combined effort of the district and the Biggs Elementary parents group (PAWS) we have purchased nine Chrome-Book carts with 35 chrome-books in each cart with an additional four carts to be added the first week of school.

All schools in the Biggs Unified School District are committed to providing the highest quality education emphasizing the new California Common Core Standards and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of the students in our community.

To the parents of our 9th grade students joining us for the first time this fall at Biggs High, we look forward to your arrival and the opportunity to get to know each and every one of you.  We know that the transition to high school can be filled with both challenges and opportunities, but through the collaborative efforts of faculty, upper class students and you at home, we can make this a smooth and gratifying experience.

Again, we are looking forward to a wonderful year and we are truly on the Road to Success here at Biggs Unified School District.  Come join us today to be part of this winning team!  If you have any question please contact me at (530) 868-1281 ext. 250

Yours in education,
Doug Kaelin, Superintendent Biggs Unified
