RULES FOR THE COMPUTER LAB

1.      No student use of the lab or any facilities without direct teacher supervision.

2.      No student use of the teacher’s computer whatsoever.

3.      This is an educational computer lab, not a video arcade or chat room.
Computer video games and any sort of chat will NOT be used in this class.  We’ll have fun in other ways. No chat rooms or bulletin boards, etc..  We’re responsible for your welfare and chat rooms can be DANGEROUS if you encountered a “predator”.

4.      No food, drink, gum, candy, sunflower seeds allowed.
Don’t bring anything in here that can make a mess of the computer keyboards or printers.

5.      Touch something metal before touching the computer.
This is to dissipate static electricity that can ruin computer parts, even zap keyboards and mice.

6.      Observe proper care of disks.
Don’t touch the magnetic surface.  Don’t expose it to sunlight, heat, magnetism, moisture, and dust.

7.      Do not attempt to fix our computer equipment.
Do not open the actual computer hardware box (system case or tower) or remove any cables, etc without expressed teacher permission.

8.      Do not customize windows and other programs  (like changing background screen colors or screen savers).  Leave them all running the standard way for all students. Do NOT install ANY software, toolbars, etc. Don’t agree to any “user agreement” or install any toolbar or screensaver, wallpaper, etc.  They will pirate your computer and slow you down!!!!!!!!!!

9.      Follow directions for printing.  Only print your document once.
If it doesn’t print out, let the teacher know.  It won’t do any good to try to print multiple times if it didn’t print the first time unless we fix the problem.  Ask the teacher to look at the monitor to cancel print jobs.  Do NOT print Web pages.  Take notes instead.

10.  Check if your computer is on before you hit the power button.
Wiggle the mouse or hit the ESC (escape) key and see if the monitor or computer wakes up.  Check if the monitor is turned on. Check lights and switches on both the computer and the monitor.  Don’t just hit power buttons on and off.  Learn how these things go to “standby” or “hibernate” mode.

11.  To restart a frozen computer, don’t just turn it off.
Instead use Ctrl – ALT – Delete  (CAD).
You can then check the “Task Manager” and end running programs or applications or, if needed, restart from there.

12.  At the end of the period, log yourself off, log the “generic” student back on.  Exit out of all programs.  Leave windows only running.

13.  If your class is supposed to turn off the computers, like at the end of the day on Friday:  Check that all programs are stopped, then choose START, Shut Down, Shut Down.  Leave the monitors on; turn off the computer AFTER it says it’s time to do so. If a machine refuses to turn off, hold the power switch in for 30 seconds, don’t let go ‘till then.

14.  Push all chairs in, clean up the papers and mess    Leave the room better than you found it.

Students not abiding by these rules may not use the computer lab.
