Hello!

I hope everyone had a wonderful time with their families during spring break.  I, too, am happy to be back at school and I missed my students greatly!!  We began the 4th quarter at the middle school on April 10th.  The 8th graders are finally on the homestretch to graduation.  Graduation is set for Wednesday, June 13th at 7:00 PM at the High School football field, with the graduation party following at the High School Multi beginning at 9:00 PM.  The party is for 8th grade graduates only.  Students will be required to attend school the following day.

The 6th graders made their adventure to Woodleaf Outdoor Camp on April 23rd and returned back to school on Friday, April 27th.  Mrs. Hamblin, Mrs. Smith and myself made a quick trip up to see the students.  They all were having a great time and were so well behaved.  We are very proud of our students at BMS and Richvale!!

The scare of the lock-down sent many parents to BES/BMS to pick up their students on Thursday, April 19th.  We appreciate the calmness and patience of the many parents trying to pick up their children with such limited help in the office.  The teachers and the students handled the situation very well.  Because of this incident, open house had to be cancelled.

Also coming up at BES/BMS is STAR testing week, beginning Tuesday, May 8th-Monday, May 14th.  We ask that you have your child attend school everyday during this time, and to please schedule all doctor and dentist appointments for either after school, or on another day.  It is imperative that all students get adequate rest and nutrition.  If you would like to send a snack with your child, please feel free to do so.

Lastly, with the weather warming up again, we are having some problems with the dress code.

Please be reminded that we DO NOT allow spaghetti straps, strapless, or low-cut shirts, short shorts/skirts, or saggy pant/shorts.  We also do not allow undergarments to show.  If your student comes to school dressed inappropriately, we will send them to the office to call home for a change of clothes.  Thank you in advance for helping us take care of this matter.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Francis

BIGGS CHESS TEAM PLACES 9TH AT THE NATIONALS

On March 30 through April 1 the United States Chess Federation held its National Junior High (K-9) tournament in Sacramento.  The event was held at the Sacramento Convention Center and over 1100 players from 37 states competed in 6 different sections.

Biggs sent 6 players to the tournament, and they came home with a 9th place team trophy.  In addition, Bryan Rodriguez tied to 10th place out of 150 players in his section to win an individual trophy.

The other players on the team who scored wins and contributed to the team’s success were:  Christian Orozco, Jacob Frost, Luis Escalante, Kairah Dunn, and Kristopher McDonald.

All of the players received a medal for their efforts and they will all get an individual picture and a team picture to commemorate the event.

PIONEER DAY

A big thank you to Sun West Milling for the generous donation of $425 to cover the cost of the Living History Program on May 24.  The BES third graders will be dressing like pioneers and traveling to Paradise for Pioneer Day.  Students will participate in many activities including preparing their own lunch!

FINGERPRINTS FOR FIELD TRIPS

Any parents or other family members who would like to attend a field trip with their student must be fingerprinted.  Please pick up the paper work from the BES Office.  It takes several days for the process.

EIGHTH GRADE PROMOTION

Richvale School has enjoyed the addition of the 7th and 8th grade students this year. We couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and contribution to our school! We are looking forward to promoting our three eighth grade students to high school on June 12th but we will certainly miss them!

Ms. Angle’s class will be going on an end-of-the-year trip to Marine world to help our 8th graders celebrate their promotion. We are looking forward to the special activities on the Safari Discovery Day!

FUN AT THE SACRAMENTO ZOO

On April 12th the students of Richvale School visited the Sacramento Zoo.  It was a good time.  We got to see lots of different kinds of animals.

We learned about animal adaptations. Adaptations protect animals from predators and help them to survive in their environment.  Turtles have shells for protection, zebras have stripes to blend in, and macaws have long tails to help them balance out their heavy beaks.  All around the zoo we saw animals with special adaptations.

It was really exciting to see the new penguin exhibit.  We got to see penguins up close diving and swimming in a big pool.  They were really cute in their black and white suits!

Leslie Field, a head zookeeper, took us up close to the giraffes.  She taught us all about the giraffe’s adaptations to the African savannah.  Did you know that giraffes have long blue tongues?

All in all it was a wonderful time at the Sacramento Zoo!  Of course we can’t wait to go there again!

ALEXIS O’NEILL

Alexis O’Neill came to our school.  She is a special author that writes cool books.  Our favorite book is The Recess Queen.  We got to put on a play and learn how to make pocket notebooks for writing.  If you want to write just ask yourself  “I wonder” questions.  Then go look for the answers!

AWESOME WOODLEAF

We had a great week at Woodleaf.  The weather was perfect.  We hiked down to the old growth forest, observing the ancient Indian grinding stone.  In our Earth Science class, we learned all about how plates move, and how mountains are formed.  We even got to blow up a volcano!  We had survival.  In survival we learned how to build a shelter, and how to survive if we ever get lost in the wilderness.  One of the best parts of Woodleaf was the night hike.  We saw four bats and two deer.  When gazing at the stars we saw the Big Dipper, Little Dipper, and Casiopia.

In conclusion:  if I ever get to go again I want to be a camp counselor.

HELP YOUR CHILD DO BETTER ON END-OF THE YEAR TESTS

Standardized testing is scheduled for May 7 through May 11.

The end of the year can mean lots of tests for your child.  Although you can't study for your children, there are things you can do to make test taking a little less stressful.  Here are some suggestions.

ę          Talk it over.  Some kids suffer from "test anxiety."  They worry so much about the test that they worry themselves into a poor performance.  Your attitude should be, "Do your best—but the world won't come to an end if you don't get a perfect paper."

ę          Remind your child to listen and follow directions.  Before giving a test, teachers often tell students things they need to know.  Should they try to guess?  Should the essay question be written on every other line?  Make sure you child listens carefully to what the teacher has to say.

ę          Give your child practice in following directions.

ę          Make a game of it.  Give him a recipe and ask him to follow it.  Or, ask him to look through a newspaper article and circle all the nouns.  Try timing your children as they complete these tasks—standardized tests often have a time limit.

ę          Make sure your child is physically ready to take a test.  Be sure she gets plenty of sleep the night before.  Prepare a favorite breakfast so she'll take the test on a full stomach.  Encourage her to wear a sweater that she can remove—there's nothing worse than being too cold.

ę          Schedule doctor and dental appointments so they don't conflict with the testing week.
